(Fwd) Skalowalnosc Progressa do 2000 klientow

Jeszcze raz zapraszam na VI Konferencję do Kazimierza.
Przy okazji, żeby się podbudować przesyłam ciekawostkę (jak na razie na naszym rynku), ale też i doskonałą reklamę Progressa.

Testy Progressa przeprowadzał w USA jeden z VARów Progressa na 64-procesorowej maszynie IBM RS 6000 osiągając zadowalającą wydajność przy 2000 jednoczesnych klientach bazy. Liczba 2000 jest zarazem fizycznym limitem wersji 8.2, to znaczy że więcej podłączyć się nie da.
Z poniższego tekstu można wyczytać następujące cenne informacje:
1.	System Progress doskonale sobie radzi w dużych zakresach klientów pracujących jednocześnie z bazą danych, czyli NADAJE się do naprawdę dużych przedsiębiorstw.
2.	Progress w pełni wykorzystuje wieloprocesorową architekturę maszyny (jeden z częstszych zarzutów stawianych Progressowi to brak pracy współbieznej, jak widać nie jest to prawdą).
3. Obecny przy testach konsultant z Progress Software nie mial wiele do roboty; standardowo przeprowadzona instalacja Progressa nie wymagała skomplikowanych operacji strojenia w celu uzyskania lepszych wyników. To potwierdza fakt, że administrowanie bazą Progress jest łatwe i nie wymaga długotrwałych szkoleń .
4. W ciągu 3 tygodni prac, Progress ani razu nie spowodował błedu, a gdy raz system operacyjny się "wyłożył" baza Progressa podniosła się w ciągu 30 sekund.  Życzyłbym każdemu takiej niezawodności.
5.	Identyczne testy i podobne wyniki zostały osiągnięte również na maszynie HP (informację o tym wysyłałem kilka dni temu). To bardzo dobrze świadczy o przenośności Progressa.

Progress - It Just Works!
I spent the last two days at IBMs SP manufacturing plant in Poughkeepsie NY observing the NxTrend/IBM benchmark running on Progress 8.2A using all the new database features in that release.  I say observing because the benchmark required no difficult tuning - Progress scaled virtually out of the box. I cannot say enough about the competence of our NxTrend application partner who lead the benchmarking effort.  Cheers to having outstanding partners!
We were able to show again linear scalability for client/server *and* were able to split the server into multiple databases and show linear scale up.  In this situation we had 5 client machines and 2 server machines supporting 2000 users (our 8.2A limit) running on a 64 processor IBM RS6000/SP parallel processor.  Peak transaction rates were about 400tps or 24,000 tpm with a real application using the customer's expected peak workload.  Each server was hosting 40 SSA disk drives with a total of 320GB of disk space.  This is IBMs most sophisticated hardware and is a significant achievement.
At my request we ran an online backup during the test with 2000 users pounding on the system and incurred only a 15% performance degradation writing the backup to the *same* drives that contained the database - not something we would recommend, but something the customer who was there observving was extremely pleased to see.
The ability to demonstrate such results on both HP and IBM platforms with a general purpose database puts us in an elite class of database vendors and is something that I think we can leverage publically and with our larger partners.  I will be talking more about that with Rick Reidy and Bob Bristol.
We have done some exciting benchmarks in-house that I have sent mail about in the past, but this the strongest demonstration and proof of our 4GL and database technology combined with amazing benchmark results that I have seen in my five years at Progress.  During 3 weeks of benchmarking there was not a single Progress related failure and when the OS did crash on occation, database crash recovery was successful and complete in 30 seconds.  Cheers to  the reliability and performance of the 8.2A product!

BTW, this plant has a lab with the most powerful computer system in the world.  It had 512 machines connected together via high speed fiber switch for a total of 4096 processors.   Each row of disk drives (there were several) contained 1728 devices with over 15TB is disk space.  A humbling experience for me.
